‘You Ruined My Family’ : Court Upholds Prison Sentence for Father-in-Law Who Stabbed Daughter-in-Law

A man in his 70s was sentenced to three years in prison for the attempted murder of his daughter-in-law, with the ruling upheld on appeal.

The Seoul High Court confirmed the original sentence, rejecting the prosecution’s request for a harsher six-year term.

The incident occurred on January 10, 2025, around 8:20 a.m., at an apartment in Mapo-gu, Seoul.

The defendant went to his son’s home without notice and confronted his son, demanding to know why he had been blocked from contact.

When the son refused to engage and left the apartment, the defendant turned his anger toward his daughter-in-law (in her 50s).

He stabbed her multiple times with a knife, accusing her of:

Destroying the father–son relationship, and

Cutting off family ties after marriage.

Other family members were present in the home at the time and immediately called police.

The defendant was arrested at the scene, while the victim:

Sustained injuries to her shoulder,

But survived without life-threatening harm.

Investigators found that:

The father-in-law had financially supported the couple, including buying them a home.

He had harbored long-standing resentment, believing his daughter-in-law was “unfilial” for avoiding contact with her in-laws for years.

On the day of the attack:

He reportedly pressured his son to divorce,

Became enraged when his son refused,

And committed the crime impulsively, driven by emotion.

The court cited mitigating factors:

The defendant acknowledged the facts of the crime,

And the act was deemed unplanned and emotional, rather than premeditated.

Neither the defendant nor prosecutors filed a further appeal, making the three-year prison sentence final.

The case highlights:

How family conflict, entitlement, and control issues can escalate into extreme violence, and

That financial support or parental status offers no legal justification for such acts.
